The Strange Ox is a creature in Baldur’s Gate 3 that you can encounter during your journey in Emerald's Grove. To the naked eye, it might appear to be a normal ox, blending in with the other oxen. However, as soon as you highlight your surroundings or hover your mouse over the Ox, you'll discover that it's named "Strange Ox" for a reason.

The Strange Ox in Baldur’s Gate 3
You can strike up a conversation with the Ox if your character has the ability to speak to animals. A few dialogue options will then be presented, allowing you to question the creature.
Successfully rolling a high Arcana check will reveal the Ox's true intention, which is to travel to the bustling city of Baldur's Gate. But why would an Ox want to visit this city? This is where things become even more intriguing.
If you decide to attack the Strange Ox, the creature will explode into acid and leave behind a Shapeshifter’s Boon Ring. This magical item grants you an extra d4 to all checks while shapeshifting and disguising yourself. If you own the Mask of the Shapeshifter, you should be able to use it to its full potential.
From this, we can infer that the Ox might be a shapeshifter attempting to disguise itself and blend in with other animals to enter Baldur's Gate, although this isn't confirmed. While it may seem cruel, you can obtain a Shapeshifter's Boon Ring by killing the creature, and this item may be useful in certain situations, especially if you want to hide from known characters.
